What is ZigBrick?

Locking yourself to fixed devices and capabilities is the last thing you'd want to do in the fast evolving field of IoT. With traditional offerings, upgrading is not supported and replacement comes at a huge cost. The more devices are loaded with built-in features, the more expensive they get, and the more costly an upgrade will be.

This is why we created ZigBrick. ZigBrick is a tailored IoT solution, based on the ZigBee standard, that you can build and upgrade yourself one brick at a time. It doesn't matter if you have the maker skills or not. Only the maker spirit is what you need because building IoT with ZigBrick is as simple as laying bricks that snap together. ZigBrick automatically detects, configures, visualizes, and gives you control over what you've built.

How is ZigBrick different?

Secure

ZigBrick takes security seriously on several fronts: None of your data leaves your home. The bundled gateway manages everything locally. And being open source, your are assured that it does what it claims.
The wireless standard used utilizes AES 128-bit encryption to prevent network eavesdropping. ZigBrick avoids the common pitfall of most other IoT devices and addresses the weak point of key update. ZigBrick carefully manages key exchanges through additional secure key-exchange algorithms and non-interceptable wired methods.

Scalable

Gone are the days that you had to compromise between coverage and cost. Feature-overloaded solutions mean poor coverage because they are simply too expensive to add to every room, and often the steep cost comes from built-in functionality that you don't need. On the other hand, shopping for stripped down devices forces you to use several --often from different vendors-- at each node, this increases the cost in addition to making manageability more difficult.

Ideally, you should have a smart device at every room with only the features you need there and nothing more. Only ZigBrick allows you to do that. ZigBrick allows you to add only the functions you need wherever you want at any time.

Open

ZigBrick is built on top of a solid foundation: ZigBee, the only open, global wireless standard to provide the foundation for the Internet of Things. OpenHab, a vendor and technology agnostic open source automation software for your home.

ZigBrick pays it forward and provides an open standard of its own: The Maker Brick. The Maker Brick makes ZigBrick extensibility virtually unlimited. It comes as an enclosed expansion board that can be connected to other ZigBricks, offering full exposure of the underlying micro-controller pins with full documentation. The Maker Brick together with ZigBrick offers a simplified GUI-based definition and configuration for your created ZigBee devices.

The Hub

ZigBrick snaps to Raspberry PI upgrading it to work as a ZigBee hub. This eliminates the need for you to invest in proprietary expensive hardware as typically required with other solutions. With ZigBrick, only one Raspberry PI can connect your whole ZigBrick network to your home network.
The Gateway

OpenHab offers a single user interface for your browser, tablets, and mobile phones. While many solutions are based on proprietary ecosystems, OpenHab is supported by Eclipse SmartHome making it a viable option to provide truly open platforms without vendor lock-ins.

The Brain Brick

Provides computation and wireless connectivity. It may be powered directly through micro-USB or optionally obtain power through the battery-powered heart brick. This brick offers touch and tap control, tamper resistance, and OTA update.

The Heart Brick

Provides battery power that lasts more than 2 years under typical usage. In addition, this brick contains an OLED display displaying alerts and updates.
